Blog: Monkey Island Revival Party

On February 23rd, the Monkey Island Revival Party took place at the WUK in Vienna. Martin Kremecek, the main organizer, really did hell of job: All events were fun to watch, everything seemed well prepared and between all this he even had the time to remember me and introduce me to some guys from JoWood.

There were several compos: coconut beer bottle bowling, insult fighting, cotton swabs fights, best costume and more. Since I was pretty drunk I missed a few events, I think there also was a trivia.

I applied for the Speed Monkeying, even trained with the savegames for a few evenings :) However this compo was first postponed and then canceled due to lack of candidates. At the end Martin gave me the price because I was the last man standing :))) Observe my own copy of Sam and Max Season 1! Arrrr, Booty!

You truly could feel the Monkey Island spirit. At least for me the revival worked out pretty well - I had several flashbacks back to when I was 14 :). The band sucked a bit, music wasn't that good before midnight. Alcohol wise the event was a huge success. The Grog however was a bit too sweet for my taste... Battery acid anyone?

Blog: Howto remove static noise at a faulty MacBook

The line-out/headphone jack of my MacBook Intel Core Duo exhibited a low level static hum type of noise, sometimes also known as "Brumm". The sound only occurred when the Mac was hooked up to the LAN.

First I suspected bad wiring on my side and replaced several components: New power adapter with "Clean Power" filtering, a new switch, new network cards for both LAN servers and finally a really expensive new patch cable. Sadly all these attempts didn't solve it. The only conclusion left was that the MacBook itself has some internal soldering-fuckup. I tried Apple support but only got the usual copy/paste reply.

So I bought a 13 cents duct tape and put it on the metal coat of the patch cable leading from the MacBook to the switch. See image above :)

And that did it!

How I despised that noise!! I can't put it into words.
It's the relief of the year..

Blog: Quake 2 - High-Res

Last week (after days of Command & Conquer 3 / Civilization IV fun) a buddy of mine and me came up with the idea to replay a few cooperative-game-play oldies like Quake 2, Delta Force series, a few ancient RTS games like Dark Reign or Battle Realms and last but not least MOO 2. Thanks to Hamachi most 'LAN only' multi-player games now fully work over the internet and did ease up firewall/router configuration a lot. We're still trying to get the IPX based MOO2 to run, results pending...

Originally we planned to start with Battle Realms and Delta Force, however after a quick peek-a-boo we realized that we had the original games much more detailed and entertaining in our minds that they turned out to be after all those years. So we skipped right to guaranteed fun - which was Quake 2 and it's actually very unique cooperative multi-player mode.

Why the heck don't add more developers co-op game play to their silly deathmatch games? It's hard enough to find quality online gamers and hanging out around the well known lobbies quickly get quite disappointing (age difference!). There's a big need for 'two-player-games' IMO outside of the usual strategy classics.

Well back to Quake 2: We sorta suspected that there could be a few 3rd parts mods for Q2 which would improve the visual appearance; but what we found sure exceeded our expectations:

Quake II Evolved is basically a complete rewrite of the Quake 2 engine done by Blur with shader and high-res texture support. Together with this Texturepack (search for 'complete' + 'models' and 'correction') the overall result is almost stunning. We were required to delete the items/, objects/ and weapons/ sub-folder from the models.zip, they sorta produced weired results.

Quake 2 co-op mode turned out to be the retro-gaming fun we were aiming for.

Review: Geheimakte Tunguska

A slow-paced and therefore very relaxing point-and-click adventure with outstanding graphics, great UI, very entertaining story and good riddles. It appeared to me that the actual engine behind the game is quite excellent, I'm looking forward to see more releases from Fusionsphere.

The countless scenes where the chapters takes place were well designed but at the end far too many with sometimes no obvious connection to the actual background-story. I disliked quite a lot of dialogs; many felt silly to me and lowered the overall quality of the story. The voice actors seemed to had no briefing on the emotional states of their characters.. but worst: even the street workers in Moskau didn't have the slightest accent.

Still, I recommend to purchase this game to anyone who likes puzzle/adventure games that doesn't force you to rush through the story and don't mind the lack of a replay value.
